Senior Economist

The Independent Evaluation Office has an opening for a Senior Economist at its office in Washington DC.

The IEO is a small unit that operates independently of IMF management and at arm’s length from the Executive Board. It produces about two evaluations per year on issues related to the IMF, with the objective of supporting the IMF Executive Board in its oversight function, strengthening the learning culture of the IMF, and enhancing transparency. See our Evaluations page for the list of ongoing and completed evaluation projects as well as of topics being considered for future ones.

The selected candidate will be expected to contribute to one or more ongoing evaluations as well as a new evaluation to be launched in 2021. S/he will help the respective team leaders in executing the evaluation(s), including by contributing to background papers, helping supervise the work of consultants and research officers, and contributing to the main evaluation report. S/he would be expected to work independently on background work for these reports, and to contribute to reports prepared by IEO colleagues.

Candidates are required to hold an advanced university degree in economics (with specialization in macroeconomics/finance) or related fields and a minimum of 6 years’ professional experience in economic policy or in an academic/research environment. Experience in a central bank, finance ministry, or international organization would be particularly relevant. Excellent drafting skills, and willingness and ability to listen to and probe alternative views are required. Proficiency in English is required, and fluency in other languages is desirable. Familiarity with the Fund’s mandate and operations and knowledge of evaluation methodology are also desirable.
