Senior Economist

The Independent Evaluation Office has an opening for a Senior Economist at its office in Washington DC.


The IEO is a small unit that operates independently of IMF management and at arm’s length from the Executive Board. It produces about two evaluations per year on issues related to the IMF, with the objective of supporting the IMF Executive Board in its oversight function, strengthening the learning culture of the IMF, and enhancing transparency. The selected candidate will be expected to contribute to one or more ongoing evaluations as well as a new evaluation to be launched in 2021. S/he will help the respective team leaders in executing the evaluation(s), including by contributing to background papers, helping supervise the work of consultants and research officers, and contributing to the main evaluation report. S/he would be expected to work independently on background work for these reports, and to contribute to reports prepared by IEO colleagues.


Candidates are required to hold an advanced university degree in economics (with specialization in macroeconomics/finance) or related fields and a minimum of 6 years’ professional experience in economic policy or in an academic/research environment. Experience in a central bank, finance ministry, or international organization would be particularly relevant. Excellent drafting skills, and willingness and ability to listen to and probe alternative views are required. Proficiency in English is required, and fluency in other languages is desirable. Familiarity with the Fund’s mandate and operations and knowledge of evaluation methodology are also desirable.

Research Officer / Sr. Research Officer

The Independent Evaluation Office of the IMF is looking for a Research Officer beginning as soon as possible. The candidate’s primary initial assignment will be to undertake analytical and data work in support of a new IEO evaluation. The initial appointment will be for one year but will be renewable depending on the needs of the office (to a maximum of four years).


Major Duties and Responsibilities


  • Assisting staff economists, evaluators, and consultants in conducting quantitative data analysis utilizing econometric and other statistical tools.
  • Preparing charts and tables, accessing and manipulating macroeconomic data from a wide range of sources, including IFS, OECD, WB, INS, BEL, Current Economic Indicators, WEO, WEFA, Haver, DataStream, Reuters, Bloomberg and internet, among others.
  • As needed, statistical and econometric analysis, including stochastic simulations.
  • Supporting staff economists, evaluators, and consultants in retrieving and accessing documents, arranging and keeping records of interviews, and preparing background papers.


Applicant must be able to work independently under minimum supervision and be accountable for the accuracy of both data and programs.


Minimum Qualifications


Advanced degree in Macroeconomics, Finance, or related field. Strong analytical, quantitative and computer skills is required. Proficiency in software applications, e.g. MS Office (specifically Excel and Word) and in packages such as Stata, Eviews, and Matlab, together with knowledge of statistical and econometric techniques and macroeconomic relationships is required. Excellent command of English, written and oral.
